Blend the repair into the denim
Choose a blue close to the worn area, rather than matching a darker seam allowance hidden inside the garment. Lay a strand across the fabric before sewing. Denim changes color with wear, so a perfect match to new fabric may stand out on faded knees.
Support thin areas first
Thread alone cannot restore fabric that has worn almost through. Add a suitable backing patch and stitch beyond the damaged area into sound fabric. Keep the repair flat and avoid stretching the jeans as you sew.
Test bulky seams
Try the same layered thickness on scrap fabric. Use a denim needle and settings suitable for your machine and thread, following the manual. Turn the handwheel slowly over a thick intersection; never force fabric through. For bold topstitching, check that the chosen thread fits your machine rather than assuming every denim thread is the same weight.
