A reliable everyday sewing setup begins with matching the thread to the fabric. Coats & Clark offers several thread families; the spool label matters more than choosing the thickest thread available.
Start with the fabric
For many ordinary woven garments and household projects, Dual Duty XP all-purpose thread is a practical starting point. Check the fiber, weight and recommended use on the spool. Lightweight fabric, stretch fabric and decorative stitching may need a different combination of thread, needle and stitch.
Test before the final seam
Use an offcut with the same number of layers as the project. Fit a suitable needle according to your machine manual, thread the machine with the presser foot raised, and sew a short sample. Check both sides for loops or puckering. Change one setting at a time instead of tightening tension at random.
Choose a useful color
Match the thread to the fabric in daylight. If two shades are close, test both on a scrap: the color on a full spool can look stronger than a single line of stitching. Keep the label with the spool so you can buy the same type again.
